Sudbury's continued dependence on the mining industry has delivered a low rating by Moody's Canada report naming their best- and worst-ranked communities for economic diversity. The credit rating agency's report ranked Sudbury low on their scale, but ahead of Windsor, rural Saskatchewan, Ottawa-Hull and Thunder Bay, in comparing local economies to the national economy as a whole.

Vancouver’s economy scored 92 out of 100 points, while Sudbury's ranking was 56.1. Auto industry city Windsor was ranked at 34.5 points.

Moody's claims it is not passing judgment on any city's prosperity, but says more diverse economies are less prone to cyclical swings in the overall economy and it is an important consideration in determining a city's credit rating.
