CN has donated 20,000 trees to be planted in the Sudbury community of Coniston.
The initiative is a partnership between CN, Tree Canada and the City of Greater Sudbury to enhance the city’s ongoing regreening efforts. The trees will be planted at predetermined sites through the spring and fall.
"At CN, we know that our long-term success is connected to our contribution to a sustainable future," said Scott Mumby, assistant superintendent with CN, in a news release. "We are making environmental sustainability a strategic priority for the company.”
Mumby said the project was one of seven being undertaken in partnership with Tree Canada that will result in 200,000 trees planted across Canada and the U.S. The aim is to enhance the natural environment along CN’s rail corridors.
In 2012, spring and fall planting have resulted in 71,605 tree seedlings and 47,578 shrub and understory trees planted throughout Greater Sudbury. Since 1978, a total of 9,348,227 trees and 127,921 shrub and understory trees have been planted through the program.
