A strategy to foster research and development in an effort to stimulate new private and public sector investment received a financial boost from the Greater Sudbury Development Corp. on July 9.

The board of directors of the development corporation approved $35,000 in funding towards a strategy to develop the North's health and research industry.

Sudbury Mayor Jim Gordon is spearheading a group that is seeking to develop the strategy. The group is supported by the Northern Ontario Mayors' Coalition, the Federation of Northern Ontario Municipalities, the Northwestern Ontario Municipal Association and health research stakeholders. The group is seeking funding from the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corp. to complete a study, strategy and business plan. Part of the impetus for the initiative is the establishment of the northern medical school, which is expected to attract research funding and expertise to the North.

The Canadian Institutes of Health Research estimates that Canada will need 100,000 new health researchers by 2010 and expenditures in the industry are increasing.

Preliminary research has indicated to the proposal partners that research activity can be fostered in a region through mechanisms such as endowment funds, research institutes and medical and business research facilities.
