Northern Ontario Business publisher honoured for good citizenship

Abbas Homayed among 11 Ontarians recognized for outstanding contributions

Northern Ontario Business publisher Abbas Homayed has been awarded the Ontario Medal for Good Citizenship.

Homayed is one of 11 Ontarians to be given the medal this year. The medal honours individuals for their exceptional long-term efforts and outstanding contributions to the well-being of their communities.

Homayed has spent 30 years using his experience, opportunities, and business success to make a difference in the lives of newcomers, especially refugees. He has also helped expand youth mentorship programs and palliative care initiatives, according to a news release from the province.

Sudbury MPP Glenn Thibeault was on hand for the medal presentation. He said he's known Homayed for 15 years.

“He is a tireless advocate for many important causes in our community,” Thibeault said in a news release. “On behalf of the people of Sudbury, I thank Abbas for his work to make our community, and our province a better place to live.”
