A prominent Sudbury businessman, noted by former Ontario Premier Mike Harris as “a true Canadian hero whose values, work ethic, business acumen and decency are to be emulated,” died Oct. 18 at the Sudbury Regional Hospital.

Clifford Alexander Fielding, 89, was the chairman and chief executive officer of Waters Holding Corp. and was active in the business on a daily basis. His corporate interests included Alexander Centre Industries Ltd., Wavy Industries and Fisher Construction of Sudbury, and Fisher Harbour on Great Cloche Island.

“Cliff was a man of integrity who, in spite of his significant business accomplishments, never sought publicity for his success or for his many generous contributions to the community,” said Peter Byck, a long-term adviser to Fielding.

In 1935, Fielding started a transportation company in Sudbury, and in 1943 he started Wavy Industries Ltd. By 1950, Fielding expanded his fleet to 40 trucks and a staff of 50, and continued his business expansion through trucking, transportation, construction services and real estate interests.
