High-tech investment at Sudbury college to help businesses

$2.5 million in FedNor funding will go towards applied research equipment at Cambrian College

Cambrian College in Sudbury is receiving a $2.5 million investment to help purchase state-of-the-art 3D printers, chemical analysis machines and a cutting machine to help students and businesses develop locally-made products.

High-tech equipment is coming to Cambrian College to help businesses and students develop locally-made products.

FedNor announced Oct. 12 it is investing $2.5 million for the college to purchase state-of-the-art equipment to help boost applied research and development activities in Northeastern Ontario.

Specifically, this investment will be used to purchase specialize equipment including a five-axis computer numerical control cutting machine, metal and plastic 3-D printers and several types of chemical analysis machines.

“Every applied research project at Cambrian includes students, who get a chance to work with industry solving real-time challenges facing the workplace, said Bill Best,Cambrian College president. “Our growing involvement in applied research keeps our faculty ahead of the game, and makes our students that much more attractive to employers.”

Once complete, this strategic initiative is expected to create more than 20 full-time highly-skilled jobs, while helping up to 60 businesses to innovate and expand through the introduction of new products, processes, services or technologies.

Paul Lefebvre, Member of Parliament for Sudbury, and Marc Serré, Member of Parliament for Nickel Belt, made the announcement today on behalf of the Honourable Navdeep Bains, Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development, and Minister responsible for FedNor.

“Cambrian College is one of the top 50 research colleges in Canada and this investment will help ensure they can continue to meet the research, development and technology needs of students, businesses and industry in the region,” said Lefebvre.

Serré added “This strategic investment in Cambrian College will help to further position Northeastern Ontario as a leader in the innovation economy, while creating a highly skilled workforce that will contribute to strengthening our economy.”
