The Greater Sudbury Airport is receiving $1.7 million to upgrade its water system, while Porter Airlines will receive $50,359 to establish a maintenance facility there.

The provincial government announced the funding, which comes from the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corp., on April 20.

The airport’s portion will help bolster fire suppression standards and ensure clean and safe drinking water, while also allowing for future growth.

Porter’s allotment will go toward a maintenance facility to help service its fleet of 29 Bombardier Q400 aircraft. The project will create eight new full-time positions at the airport.

Airport CEO Todd Tripp said the funding would help support the airport’s growth.

“The Greater Sudbury Airport is a vital link for the City of Greater Sudbury and surrounding region, and contributions such as this help drive the overall economic development of our community,” he said in a release.

“This financial support will directly impact our capacity to expand and grow now and into the future. Not only are we able to increase our water supply and infrastructure capacity, several jobs are being created right in our own community.

“Economic contributions of airports are impactful, given their importance in supporting and enhancing communities and business across our region and across Canada."

The Greater Sudbury Airport is one of Northern Ontario's busiest and is currently served by Air Canada, Bearskin Airlines, Porter Airlines, WestJet and Sunwing Airlines.
