Closer ties between Falconbridge Ltd. and Inco Ltd. would deliver numerous benefits in developing new properties in the nickel-rich Sudbury basin, says Falconbridge's new president Derek Pannell.

Closer ties between Falconbridge Ltd. and Inco Ltd. would deliver numerous benefits in developing new properties in the nickel-rich Sudbury basin, says Falconbridge's new president Derek Pannell. During a conference call April 22, following the company's release of its first-quarter results, Pannell said Falconbridge's latest Nickel Rim discovery near the Sudbury Airport and its proximity to Inco's nearby Victor property might bring about some opportunities to share a joint shaft for both properties. Pannell has been talking with Inco officials since assuming the helm of the world's largest nickel producer this year. Though he declined to delve into specifics, Pannell did say the two companies maintain a dialogue at many levels. First-quarter results show the nickel giant accumulated $20.4 million in consolidated earnings, or 10 cents a share.
