The Centre for Research in Occupational Safety and Health (CROSH) at Laurentian University is receiving funding over the next five years from the Ontario Government to support core operations in making workplaces safer.

A Sudbury-based health and safety research centre is getting support from the Ontario government in its ongoing efforts to make Northern Ontario workplaces safer.

A news release stated the Centre for Research in Occupational Safety and Health (CROSH) at Laurentian University will receive funding from the Ontario Government over the next five years.

The centre will receive approximately $290,000 in 2018-19 and then $550,000 annually for the next four years to support CROSH’s core operations.
Those operations include:

  • Engaging workers and industries in remote and rural Northern Ontario communities and promoting a strong health and safety culture

  • Helping small businesses get involved in CROSH’s scientific committees

  • Developing collaborative partnerships with industry addressing the top hazards that result in occupational injury, illness and disease.

In the first year, funding will help CROSH expand its research capacity and establish a Scientific Committee for Occupational Health and Wellness. CROSH’s research includes a focus on Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder.

CROSH is the only occupational health and safety research centre dedicated to Northern Ontario, with a focus on engaging workers and workplaces to understand and identify solutions to their unique health and safety challenges.

“This funding will help Ontario continue to be one of the safest places to work in the world. Working with excellent partners like CROSH on advancing occupational health and safety through solid research, we can make a positive difference in the lives of our workforce for generations to come,” said Kevin Flynn, Minister of Labour.
