The Carpenters Union Local 2486 in Sudbury got a financial boost on May 22 from the federal government.

A total of $128,975 will go towards the union's Northern Development and Union Pre-Training program. It will help the union improve the quality of training with up-to-date equipment and materials, as well as support innovation and enhanced partnerships to address longstanding challenges that limit apprenticeship outcomes in Canada.

Training equipment includes a wacker excavator, robotic total stations, and pro-layout systems.

As a result of this investment, more apprentices will be able to develop their skills, complete their training, and find good, well-paying jobs, said a news release.

Nickel Belt MP Marc Serré made the announcement on behalf of Patty Hajdu, minister of employment, workforce development and labour.

“The Union Training and Innovation Program will help new generations of workers benefit from the mentorship and training that unions and other training organizations are so well equipped to offer,” Serré said in the news release. “Through this project in Nickel Belt, our government is building stronger communities and strengthening the middle class.”

“Apprentices at Carpenters Union Local 2486 will be better prepared to enter the labour market with the skills they’ve developed using the new equipment,” said Tom Cardinal, union co-ordinator and Northern Ontario area manager for the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America Local 2486.

“Offering high-quality skills training and better support to our members as they complete their training is paramount and this investment from the federal government will allow us to continue doing so.”
