Cambrian College paramedic grads continue perfect streak

Latest group marks 14th year in a row all students from program pass provincial certification exams

Sudbury's Cambrian College's paramedic program continued a tradition, with 100 per cent of their graduates passing the Advanced Emergency Medical Care Assistant exam.

This marks the 14th year in a row the program has generated a class where everyone passed with perfect scores.

“Congratulations to this year’s graduating class. This is an amazing achievement and demonstrates the hard work and dedication of our students toward their profession,” said Derek McKinnon, program professor and coordinator, in an Aug. 22 news release.

"I would also like to thank our incredible full-time faculty, Jason Lane and Brad Roney, who is the coordinator of our Advance Care Paramedic Flight Program, our fantastic part-time faculty, and our great team of technicians and departmental staff for all the time and energy they invest in this program and in our students.”

The college offers both a primary care paramedic program and an advanced care graduate certificate program. Cambrian is the only college in Ontario to offer the latter.

"This is great news and what better time to learn this than just before the start of another school year,” said Bill Best, Cambrian president.

"We’re producing the high-quality graduates employers want, and this is just another example of one of the many excellent things that’s getting Cambrian noticed around Ontario and outside the province.”

One of those students is Samantha McLean, who works for the City of Greater Sudbury as a paramedic. She graduated from the Primary Care Paramedic Program in 2017, and the flight paramedic program in 2018.

“Cambrian has really experienced faculty and great facilities that prepared me for the real-life scenarios I face on the job," McLean said."What I enjoy about being a paramedic is that you get to be there for patients and their families. For many, you offer that glimmer of light at a very dark time. It’s not always glamorous work, but it is very rewarding.”
