Expansion-oriented Village Media has set up shop in Collingwood.

CollingwoodToday.ca launched Feb. 26 and brings the Village Media formula of locally-driven digital news in real time to the southern Georgian Bay community.

John Hammill is the new publisher, Nicole Parks is the regional sales manager, and Stuart Snelgrove is the account executive.

“We believe that locally-driven news is essential to communities,” said Jeff Elgie, CEO of Village Media, in a news release.

“That’s why we’ve started or helped launch more than 10 digital news sites in communities just like Collingwood within the past few years — communities that in some cases were also told their local newspaper didn’t factor into someone else’s bottom line.

“We are proud to be extremely community-minded and cover important stories in your town. We have a great team in place and look forward to becoming an integrated part of the community’s daily news.”

The site provides breaking news, feature stories, Canadian Press stories, obituaries, and other regional content by desktop, tablet, and mobile applications.

Headquartered in Sault Ste. Marie, Village Media’s other news sites are SooToday.com, GuelphToday.com, BarrieToday.com, BayToday.ca, ElliotLakeToday.com, TimminsToday.com, and OrilliaMatters.com. The company has strategic partnerships with Sudbury.com in Sudbury, TBNewswatch.com in Thunder Bay, the Manitoulin Expositor (manitoulin.ca), and Rogers Media in Halifax (HalifaxToday.ca)
