Ontario Northland has sent out layoff notices to employees in its remanufacturing and repair division in North Bay.
“Due to the reduction in remanufacturing work, 31 layoff notices have been issued in the remanufacturing and repair division in North Bay," said Corina Moore, president and CEO of Ontario Northland, in a statement.
"Like many other companies in manufacturing, Ontario Northland must balance the number of jobs with operational requirements."
Moore added that she is confident that the division’s reputation for quality repair will result in more work in the coming months.
Nipissing MPP and Finance MInister Vic Fedeli reacted to the news.
"First, let me restate my confidence in the men and women at Ontario Northland and the quality work they do day in, day out," Fedeli said in a statement.
"Ontario Northland will provide those affected with career counselling and employment service resources, and it’s my hope they can be recalled when work becomes available.
"It should be noted that this is an ONTC operational decision, and not the result of any 2019 Budget funding changes. Our government will continue to support the ONTC because it is an important part of northern Ontario’s transportation network."
