SUDBURY – Nov. 9, 2021: Dozens of Cambrian College students will soon have a new opportunity to take their books and laptops on the road and pursue their education overseas.

Cambrian is receiving $500,000 for its Study Abroad initiative, to support up to 85 domestic students who want to pursue part of their studies in another country. A particular focus will be on providing opportunities to students who are either Indigenous, low-income, or are living with a disability. The Study Abroad initiative will begin accepting applications from students in January of 2022.

The Government of Canada is providing the funding through its Global Skills Opportunities Program. The funding is being administered by Colleges and Institutes Canada (CICan), a national organization that advocates for and supports public colleges and polytechnic institutes in Canada.

“This project will provide a variety of virtual and in-person experiences for students in Northern Ontario who are interested in studying around the world,” says Kristine Morrissey, Cambrian's vice-president of international, finance and administration. “This amazing opportunity will allow students to broaden their global and cultural perspectives while also achieving a top-tier education. It certainly is another reason why Cambrian is a go-to destination in Northern Ontario for students wanting an education with global impact.”

Participating students will have overseas study experiences ranging from one week to four months. Those experiences will include classroom instruction as well as the option for placements and work-integrated learning.

Cambrian will be working with partner institutions in Austria, Brazil, China, Denmark, Ireland, Mexico and Vietnam.

Think Globally is one of eight key objectives within Cambrian’s 2020-25 Strategic Plan. As part of this strategic priority, Cambrian is looking to create reciprocal global learning experiences and ensure members of the Cambrian community have the opportunity for a global learning experience.

“Studying abroad is an experience every student should consider,” says Cambrian president Bill Best.

“We have students from more than 40 countries and we live in a connected world. This program will help participating students become global citizens and sought-after employees, enriched with an outlook from this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.”

Global Skills Opportunity is a national outbound student mobility program that is expected to enable more than 16,000 Canadian college and undergraduate-level university students from across the country acquire the global skills employers want and the Canadian economy needs. A key component of the Government of Canada’s International Education Strategy, Global Skills Opportunity is funded by Employment and Social Development Canada and is administered jointly by Colleges and Institutes Canada and Universities Canada.
