TIMMINS - Work is starting on a project that will see the airport expanded and upgraded.
J.L. Richards and Associates picked up the $188,458 project to design facade improvements and an addition to the Victor M. Power Airport.
“Through the airport master plan, it was highlighted that the Timmins airport needed some renovations to accommodate expansion and do some improvements just to address the future needs,” Scott Tam, director of growth and infrastructure, told council on May 27.
The design is to expand the departure lounge to accommodate the increase in passengers, improve the "undersized and outdated" security area, and aesthetic and structural upgrades outside.
The design work is not budgeted for 2025, and the contract will be paid for out of the airport reserve.
The construction work is expected in 2026, said Tam.
