Unifor and Alstom will start contract bargaining next month

The previous agreement expired in May, but talks were delayed by a union election

THUNDER BAY — Members of the largest labour union at the Thunder Bay's Alstom rail car plant are currently working under the terms of an expired collective agreement.

The last contract signed by Unifor Local 1075 and Alstom's predecessor, Bombardier, expired on May 31, 2023.

Negotiations on a new deal likely would have started by now, but the union had a turnover in leadership in May, when Dominic Pasqualino retired from the presidency.

Justin Roberts was voted in as the new leader.

A union source said the two parties have mutually agreed on dates in August to begin bargaining.

The source said the membership still needs to be consulted about objectives going into the talks.

Approximately 200 Unifor members are currently working in the plant.
