Spring’s first ‘salty’ arrived in Thunder Bay

Thunder Bay port 'salty'

The Cyprus-registered M.V. Tufty was the Port of Thunder Bay’s first ocean-going vessel to enter the harbor on April 10.

The ship docked at Richardson’s Main elevator to take on a load of amber durum grain bound for Italy.

In a news release, the port authority said grain shipments have been strong in the weeks following the opening of the Great Lakes shipping season. Global demand for durum and wheat has increased as consumers stockpile staple foods during the COVID-19 lockdown.

Due to the pandemic, the first “salty” to the port would be welcomed by the traditional Top Hat ceremony but that won’t take place due to the pandemic protocol.

The shipping industry has implemented measures to prevent the potential spread of infection and enable the essential movement of food and supplies to consumers.

Tufty is owned and operated by Montreal-based Canfornav.
