Sault bridge crossings with Michigan continue to plunge

Passenger vehicle traffic in June down 30 per cent from 2024

Travel across the International Bridge at Sault Ste. Marie during the month of June was down 26.7 per cent from the same month last year. 

The bridge authority released its June traffic crossing numbers in a July 2 news release showing vehicle traffic decreased by 27,357 crossings.

That’s a slight improvement from the almost 30 per cent drop-off reported in May.

Of the total of 75,212 one-way crossings recorded in June, the biggest dive was in passenger vehicle crossings, which are down 30.6 per cent  from the same month last year. Passenger vehicles represent more than 47 per cent of all crossings.

Commuter fare traffic is down 25.2 per cent from the same period in 2024. Cars pulling trailers and commercial trucks were down 13.3 per cent and 14.6 per cent, respectively.

At the midway point of 2025, as of the end of June, crossings to date are down 23 per cent as compared to the first six months of 2024.

The bridge authority derives its operational funds from toll revenue, used for for maintenance of the bridge, the toll plaza and buildings.
