Northwestern Ontario's hub airport has landed more than $3.6 million in federal funding to make infrastructure and equipment improvements.

Thunder Bay International Airport has landed $1.7 million in federal funding from Transport Canada's Airport Relief Fund to maintain airport operations and essential air services.

The area's two MPs, Marcus Powlowski and Patty Hajdu delivered the news on March 14.

The facility is receiving $395,000 from Transport Canada's Airports Capital Assistance Program (ACAP) to purchase of a snowplow truck and a runway ice sweeper.

The northwestern Ontario is also receiving more than $1.5 million in assistance from FedNor, made available through the Aerospace Regional Recovery and the Regional Air Transportation Initiatives to upgrade lighting and HVAC equipment and replace two aging escalators in the terminal building.

The feds have spent more than $12.4 million in ACAP funding since May for projects such as rehabilitation of runways and aprons, lighting and electrical systems, LED guidance signage, runway end safety areas and the purchase of two aircraft rescue and firefighting vehicles.

"This funding will enhance airport safety for travellers, air crews and airport workers, while supporting jobs and our regional economy," said Powlowski in a statement.

"These investments will improve access to safe, reliable and efficient air transportation options, and will help us deliver our commitment to build safer, healthier and stronger communities as Canada recovers from the pandemic," added Hajdu.
