Ontario Northland Transportation Commission (ONTC) has found its new president and chief executive officer from within its ranks.

Ontario Northland's Chief Operating Officer Paul Goulet officially takes over the reins of the North Bay-based Crown transportation and telecommunications corporation, July 1.

He replaces Steve Carmichael, who is retiring after a 28-year career.

"Following a national search, Paul was chosen from a very rich pool of applicants," said ONTC chairman Ted Hargreaves in an April 23 statement. "His demonstrated leadership, exceptional experience and comprehensive understanding of the organization and the enormous contribution that Ontario Northland does and can make in the North made Paul a stand out candidate."

Goulet joined Ontario Northland in 2004 as chief information officer with Ontera, the company's telecommunications arms before being appointed its vice president and general manager in 2006.

He has an extensive consulting background working as director/chief information officer for Deloitte Consulting Outsourcing in Washington, D.C., principal consultant with Pricewaterhouse Coopers LLP in Washington and Toronto, and was president-CEO of 1st Facilities Group in Toronto.

Goulet holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Laurentian University in Sudbury.

In a statement, Goulet said he understands the importance that the company serves in northeastern Ontario.

"I am also well aware of the challenges and issues facing the region and our organization and look forward to ensuring the sustainability and growth of both."
