The Kenora Airport landed more than $8.8 million for runway paving.

Federal Transport Minister Omar Alghabra announced the news on Oct. 4.

The money is coming out of the Airports Capital Assistance Program (ACAP).

A government news release said the funding is earmarked for the rehabilitation of Runway 08-26, a taxiway and an apron. Work also involved removal of the granular base and subbase layers, and the placement of new base below the new asphalt paving.

The government said this money is top of the $370,000 it sent Kenora’s way last year to buy a sweeper used in the removal of ice and snow.

“This investment in the Kenora Airport will ensure residents in Kenora continue to have access to safe and reliable air transportation options,” said Alghabra in a statement.

The ACAP program was started in the mid-1990s when the Government of Canada decided it wanted to get out of running the small and regional airports across the country, leaving it to municipalities and locally formed authorities to take over. Ottawa said it’s spent more than $1.2 billion on 1,215 runway and taxiway projects, as well as airport lighting, fencing and snowclearing and firefighting vehicles since then.
