Pioneer Construction landed three provincial highway paving contracts in northwestern Ontario worth $22.6 million.
The Sudbury-based road contractor has an $8.1-million contract to pave 29 kilometres of Highway 17, west of Marathon; a $7.3-million paving job for 23 kilometres of Highway 11, east of Fort Frances; and a $7.2-million contract to rehabilitate 28 kilometres of Highway 71, south of the bridge at Nestor Falls.
Dryden’s Miller Northwest was awarded a $16.6-million contract to repave almost 40 kilometres of Highway 105 (the Red Lake highway), north of Highway 17 junction at Vermilion Bay.
Work on all projects begins this spring and is expected to be finished by fall.
The area mayors are, understandably, excited.
“With the heavy traffic from locals and from visitors drawn by the spectacular beauty and recreation opportunities in our area, we depend on having our highways in good condition,” said Fort Frances Mayor Roy Avis in a statement.
“I want to thank the provincial government for its latest investment in Highway 17 in our area that will help enhance safety on this busy route,” said Rick Dumas, mayor of Marathon.
