Bombardier Thunder Bay could benefit from building new GO Transit coaches if the federal government comes to the table with infrastructure funding.

The provincial government announced April 3 that it is conditionally investing $30 million in 20 new bi-level passenger cars if the $60 million project meets all the requirements of the federal Building Canada Fund and a deal is signed with Ottawa. The coaches would be purchased from Bombardier in Thunder Bay between this year and 2011.

The project is part of a larger $213 million announcement of proposed improvements including refurbished locomotives, a new passenger station in Barrie and various storage and passenger facilities.

Northern Development and Mines Minister and Thunder Bay-Superior North MPP Michael Gravelle said it was tremendous news for Bombardier and the city's economy, adding these contracts will provide a significant source of employment for the local workforce.
