Bombardier Transportation Canada has been fined $280,000 in a Thunder Bay court for two separate accidents last year that injured workers at its Thunder Bay passenger rail car plant.
In the first accident on April 13, 2012, a worker was changing a part on a mechanical tube bender when a ram crushed the worker's tip of one finger that later required amputation.
Bombardier pleaded guilty to failing to ensure that an exposed moving part on the bender machine was equipped by a guard or other device. A $140,000 fine was levied plus a 25-per-cent victim fine surcharge.
In the second accident on July 5, 2012 a worker was injured after coming into contact with a live electrical conductor. The worker, who sustained arm and hand injuries, was not wearing any rubber gloves or using an protective equipment required under the Occupational Health and Safety Act.
The labour ministry investigation determined the worker was not provided with any instructions about the use of personal protective equipment.
