The Polar Bear Express will resume operations at a reduced frequency starting on June 25.

The Ontario Northland Transportation Commission (ONTC) made the announcement through its social media channels on June 10.

“The decision for reinstatement was made after careful consideration and discussion with passengers, businesses, and municipal leaders,” the ONTC said in the statement.

“The passenger train will operate between Cochrane and Moosonee on Mondays and Thursdays.

“There will be no dining car service, so we recommend passengers bring their own non-alcoholic beverages and food.”

Typically, train service is offered along that route on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays.

But service has been suspended since April 7 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

At the time, the Crown agency called it a temporary measure put in place out of heightened concern for vulnerable people in remote communities.

The decision was made in consultation with the Government of Ontario, Ontario Northland, Mushkegowuk Council, Moose Cree First Nation, Town of Moosonee and the local health authority.

Freight service along the route has continued uninterrupted.

Because capacity is limited, ONTC is asking travellers to purchase their tickets in advance.

The agency said it would provide more information in the coming days on health and safety protocols, including physical distancing and sanitization measures.
