Ron Common, the president of Sault College, will retire next year.
Common, who took on the role in 2007, made the announcement at a recent board of governors meeting. His retirement date is effective Dec. 31, 2013. The outgoing president said he wanted to spend more time with his family.
“I leave Sault College with much admiration for our staff, faculty, administrators and board of governors,” he said in a news release.
“I am grateful to everyone in our community for their kindness and support they have showed me throughout my tenure. The Sault College story is one that begins with hope and embodies academic excellence at every turn. I thank you for this experience.”
Common has been instrumental in invigorating the school’s campus with a number of capital projects, including the construction of a new academic wing, an aviation facility and a wellness centre.
During his tenure, Common focused on educational issues related to Aboriginal groups, working extensively with Aboriginal communities throughout Canada and signing several memorandums of understanding with Aboriginal groups.
With his retirement, Dr. Common leaves a 45-year career in the field of education. He has served as a teacher, principal, professor, dean and administrator in roles that have spanned several decades.
The selection process of a new president will begin immediately.
