Thunder Bay's Valhalla Inn announced its restoration plans for its Timbers restaurant, damaged by a January 3 fire, are now complete and interior construction is underway.

In a July 10 release, the hotel said further renovations are in progress for its upscale Runway 25 Steakhouse with new interior planned. The popular local eatery will have a new aviation themed décor using various metal and wood finishes, and the lounge space will be updated.

The more casual Timbers restaurant is being relocated into space occupied by Runway 25. The fully renovated Runway 25 Steakhouse and Timbers restaurant are expected to reopen this fall. In the meantime, both restaurants are operating from a shared space.

“This is a major renovation project for the Valhalla Inn,” said general manager Mary McLellan. “Timbers restaurant has been a cornerstone for both our hotel and for the community of Thunder Bay since 1990.”

The changes have come on the heels of a major investment and renovations to 75 per cent of the 262 guest rooms and suites. The improvements have included new carpeting, bedding, furniture, and wall coverings. The remainder of the rooms will be finished by early 2014.

The Valhalla is a popular local venue for meetings and conventions. The hotel said extensive improvements have taken place in its Scandia Ballroom and event space with new carpets, drapes and updated audio-visual and sound equipment.

To date, about $2.8 million in renovations have been completed with an additional $2.3 million scheduled

through to early 2014.
