Four winners of the Sault Ste. Marie and Algoma Region IT Awards were recognized for their Internet Technology advancements at the Sault Ste. Marie Innovation Centre (SSMIC) on September 22.

The IT Executive award winner was Martin Wyant, manager of business development, PUC Telecom. He was recognized for the implementation of Broadband over Powerline, which uses the electrical grid to distribute high-speed Internet to business customers.

SubSpace Communications Inc. received the Company of the Year award for impressive growth and dedication to community involvement. With revenue growth objectives surpassing 500 per cent, they are in the process of establishing new branch offices in Northern Ontario.

Jake Cormier received the IT Student/Graduate of the Year award for making a notable impact on his community by integrating technology into the community’s daily operations. As a student in the Computer Science program at Algoma University, he started his own web-design business: ni4design.ca.

The Best Website award was given to straightsmile.ca, a site operated by Dr. Kent Floreani and designed by Lucidia. The site has a great balance of interactive and multimedia content. It improves client service and compliments the business in an industry not known for embracing web technology, according to a press release.

“We are very pleased with the number and the calibre of nominations we received in our first year. In fact, given the number of submissions, we plan on adding two new awards to next year’s program. Building awareness of the technology leaders in our IT sector is an important role the Innovation Centre can play in showcasing the talent and potential we have in the region,” SSMIC executive director Tom Vair said in the release.

The awards were held in conjunction with the Chamber of Commerce Take 5 event, hosted by SSMIC and co-hosted by PUC Telecom.
