U of T receives funding for mining innovation centre

The University of Toronto will receive $11 million in federal and provincial infrastructure funding for a new mining innovation centre.
The federal and provincial governments provided $5.5 million each for the centre, which will be built at the university's St. George campus.
The Centre for Excellence in Mining Innovation, located at Laurentian University in Sudbury, has not yet received any federal funding.
Chris Hodgson, president of Ontario Mining Association said “This just doesn't make sense to me."
This is a pretty small country so its important to concentate our expertise in one spot and do it well, he said.
The Innovation Centre for the Canadian Mining Industry in Toronto will cost a total of $20 million and is expected to receive $9 million in private donations. The entire investment is expected to create 200 jobs.
The Centre, part of the Lassonde Institute, will be a focal point for cutting edge research by U of T researchers, undergraduate and graduate students form the university's mineral and civil engineering programs at the Faculty of Applied Science and Engineering.
