A Timmins man has died after a workplace accident at a Matheson-area mine.

The Major Drilling employee went missing in a remote area of Kirkland Lake Gold's Taylor Mine on Tuesday (Feb. 8).

Yesterday, the OPP's Underwater Search and Recovery Unit located the 48-year-old man.

The name of the victim has not been released. Police say a post-mortem is scheduled for next week.

Because the Ministry of Labour is investigating, Major Drilling executive assistant Chantal Melanson said the company cannot provide additional information about the incident right now. The company is co-operating with the Ministry for the investigation.

"All we know for now is that the employee was located underwater by OPP divers yesterday but since there were no witnesses around, we will have to wait for the Ministry of Labour’s investigation to provide more information into what really happened," she said.

"He has been an employee for more than 30 years and he was a great teacher and leader to his team of coworkers and he will certainly be missed. Our deepest condolences go out to the family, friends and his coworkers. Our focus right now is offering support and counselling to his family and everybody involved while we wait for the investigation to bring more light into this accident."

Police, paramedics, the Matheson Fire Department and mine rescue units attended the scene.

The investigation is ongoing and includes the Ministry of Labour, Office of the Chief Coroner and Ontario Forensic Pathology Services.
