Sudbury mining supply entrepreneur to be honoured

Alicia Woods, who is based in Sudbury, is the general manager of Marcotte Mining and the founder and creator of Covergalls Workwear.

Alicia Woods of Sudbury has been recognized as a 2017 Young Mining Professional of the Year by the non-profit organization of the same name.

Young Mining Professionals (YMP) offers networking opportunities for young mining professionals concentrated in the Vancouver and Toronto areas. Woods is the recipient of the group’s inaugural Eira Thomas Award, which is named for Eira Thomas, currently the CEO at Vancouver-based Kaminak Gold Corp. Thomas and her business partner, Catherine McLeod-Seltzer founded Lucara Diamonds, the company that discovered a softball-sized diamond in Botswana in 2015.

Woods is being recognized for her work with Marcotte Mining, where she currently serves as general manager, as well as her work with the Sudbury Area Mining Supply and Service Association (SAMSSA) in promoting Sudbury’s mining supply industry.

Woods is also the founder of Covergalls Workwear, an industry coverall designed to fit a woman’s physique and needs. The product is made in Canada and sold across the country.

YMP is bestowing a second award this year. Nolan Watson, president and CEO at Vancouver-based Sandstorm Gold, will receive the Peter Munk Award for his work in mining financing and philanthropic efforts with Nations Cry, a foundation dedicated to providing education to children in Sierra Leone, West Africa.

Woods will be honoured at the YMP's inaugural awards gala at the Shangri-La Hotel in Toronto, March 4.
