Robert R. McEwen and his wife Cheryl donated $10 million to Laurentian University’s architecture school in June, 2016. The school changed the name to the McEwen School of Architecture to reflect the generous endowment.

Five new mining pioneers have been added to the Canadian Mining Hall of Fame.

The new inductees were installed during an annual dinner and induction ceremony in Toronto on Jan. 12.

The inductees include:

James E. C. Carter: A leader in the Alberta oil sands industry, who focused on efficiency and sustainability to grow the industry.

Robert R. McEwen: Chair and CEO of McEwen Mining Inc. and former chair and CEO of Goldcorp. McEwen donated $10 million to Sudbury’s School of Architecture, which now bears his name.

Donald A. McLeod: A mining pioneer from British Columbia, who is known for developing the Brandywine, Newhawk and Northair projects.

William S. (Steve) Vaughan: A mining lawyer who has advised and represented Canadian and international companies, and has been involved in natural resources transactions in more than 70 countries and/or mining law jurisdictions.

John Zigarlick, Jr.: Co-founder of Nuna Logistics, a construction and mining services company whose work is concentrated in the Far North. Zigarlick prioritized partnerships with Indigenous communities through his career.

The Canadian Mining Hall of Fame was conceived by the late Maurice R. Brown, former editor and publisher of The Northern Miner, as a way to recognize and honour the legendary mine finders and builders of a great Canadian industry. The hall was established in 1988 and currently has more than 170 members.

The Canadian Mining Hall of Fame is supported by the Mining Association of Canada, the Prospectors and Developers Association of Canada, the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum, and The Northern Miner.
