Northern Ontario youth tops in mining video contest

Three of the eight awards in the Ontario Mining Association's (OMA) video contest So You Think You Know Mining? were presented to young budding Northern Ontario artists at the organization's annual conference on June 15th.

Three of the eight awards in the Ontario Mining Association's (OMA) video contest So You Think You Know Mining? were presented to young budding Northern Ontario artists at the organization's annual conference on June 15th.  

Held at the Clarion Resort in North Bay, the conference and general annual meeting was titled The Future of Mining in Ontario: Is it Golden? A variety of keynote speeches, panel discussions and other topics like safety, environmental and energy issues were discussed over the course of two days.

The talented high-school students were acknowledged for their video-making efforts at a gala awards ceremony.
 

The list of the North's winners is as follows:

Best Overall ($5,000 + $500 to St. Benedict CSS for video equipment): Lego Mining - David DeLong, Grade 9 and Alan DeLong, Grade 12, St. Benedict Catholic Secondary School, Sudbury;

Best Video in a Language Other Than English (with English subtitles) ($2,500)– Wake Up to Mining - Éveillez-vous aux mines - Michelle Joncas-Bever and Emily Buchan for their team of eight, Grade 12, École secondaire catholique de La Vérendrye, Thunder Bay;

Best Writing (original screenplay) ($2,500) – Mining Matters- Katrina Malinski, Grade 11, Lockerby Composite School, Sudbury.
