Orix Geoscience was one of four companies to receive a Workplace Culture Maturity Award from Workplace Safety North on May 1.

Workplace Safety North (WSN) is recognizing four businesses for their ongoing work in fostering healthy and safe workplaces in Northern Ontario.

On May 1, the organization presented Workplace Culture Maturity Awards during its 27th annual Mining Health and Safety Conference in Sudbury.

Introduced last year, the awards program is specifically tailored to companies in the mining and forest products industries that have created a positive health and safety culture.

Sam Barbuto, a health and safety specialist with WSN, said the awards aren’t meant to measure legal compliance, or replace or audit a complete health and safety management system.

Instead, they’re meant to assess the culture of an organization, recognizing the maturity of its key practices.

This year’s recipients include:

  • Technica Mining, a mining contracting firm in Sudbury;
  • Lake Shore Gold – Timmins West, a gold-mining operation in Timmins;
  • Di-Corp, a drilling equipment supplier in North Bay; and
  • Orix Geoscience, a geological consulting firm in Sudbury.

WSN is a not-for-profit health and safety association funded by the provincial government to provide approved health and safety training and services to the mining and forest products industries. It has offices in Sudbury and North Bay.
