Placer Dome was fined $550,000 under the Occupational Health and Safety Act for two violations that caused the death of one worker and injured another three years ago. The incident occurred at the Detour Lake Mine in July 1999 when a tractor tire exploded as it was being inflated. The deceased was a Placer Dome employee while the other worked for Chartrand Equipment. The company was found guilty of failing to use safety chains when inflating the tire and failing to ensure the workers were clear of possibly blown-off parts when inflating the tire.
