After a two-week shutdown, McEwen Mining is resuming operations at the Black Fox Mine, east of Timmins.

The Toronto-based mid-tier miner made the restart announcement when posting its first-quarter production results, April 14.

Mining was temporarily suspended at Black Fox on March 26 for two weeks to allow time for management to evaluate and adapt to operating with the risks associated with the pandemic.

“Over the course of the shutdown we have implemented rigorous policies and procedures to minimize the potential risks to the health of all individuals at the mine,” said the company in a statement.

“Our miners and teams are overwhelmingly supportive of returning to work with the new safety measures, and the decision has been made to restart operations immediately.”

During the last quarter, Black Fox produced 8,328 gold equivalent ounces.

McEwen’s Black Fox Complex is a 5,100-hectare property, consisting of the Black Fox Mine and some advanced exploration projects, alongside Highway 101. The property is located 36 kilometres east of Timmins and nine kilometres east of the town of Matheson.

At their San José Mine in Argentina, McEwen is throwing the switch to restart operations after mining was temporarily suspended on March 20 due to a nation-wide mandatory quarantine imposed in that country.

Production at McEwen’s Gold Bar Mine in Nevada was scaled back as contact mining stopped on April 1, and crushing and stacking stopped April 4. Downstream activities such as heap leaching and processing are continuing.
