TIMMINS — A massive mining show is ready to rock and roll.
The City of Timmins has proclaimed June 3 to 9 Mining Week, during part of which the Canadian Mining Expo (CME) takes over the McIntyre Community Building and surrounding property.
At the May 27 proclamation at the Hollinger Open Pit Lookout, CME president Glenn Dredhart said he’s looking forward to seeing all kinds of different companies and people June 3 to 5 for the mining show.
“I couldn’t find a better group of people and a better city to work with,” said Dredhart. “And what’s coming down the pipeline is going to be far greater than what we’ve had in the past.”
CME is an excellent chance to showcase the City of Timmins and the mining industry, said Mayor Michelle Boileau.
“The opportunity to put on display the awesome mining support and service ecosystem we have here, and the ecosystem of businesses that support the mining sector,” she said. “It makes Timmins a very attractive place to come and do business.”
She said she will be attending one day of the event before taking part in the 2025 Northern Ontario Service Deliverers Association (NOSDA) Conference in Sault Ste. Marie.
“I’ll be at the gala dinner, and I’ll be around for the setup,” she said. “I’m looking forward to meeting some delegates.”
The CME is a trade show and conference for mining, service, and support companies in the mining industry. It’s held annually in Timmins and includes educational and networking events, as well as product demonstrations.
With the event growing every year, Dredhart said the challenge is finding space to fit everyone.
This year's event features 56 tents outside, which can make parking an issue. A shuttle service is available from Vipond Road.
“There isn’t any space left open,” he said. “Instead of trying to make that turn to go into the ground, we have shuttle buses leaving every five minutes. You’re picked up and dropped off whenever you want.”
Representatives from all over the world will be in town, and that was very much on purpose, said Dredhart.
“What we worked on this year was attracting a broader audience, so we spent a lot of time and marketing to mines outside of the Timmins area,” said Dredhart.
A group from Baffinland, an iron ore mining company based in the Qikiqtani region of North Baffin, Nunavut, is paying attention and wants to explore the sites and business opportunities in Timmins.
“That happens not just with mines in Canada but those from outside Canada,” he said. “They come from all over the world.”
“Last year we had 13 countries that were represented at the Canadian Mining Expo, the year prior it was nine,” he said. “It makes our job a little bit easier to say we’re from Timmins and we’re working with the city of Timmins and this is what we have to offer.”
Events such as the gala dinner, the Indigenous forum, and the projects in the pipeline events are already sold out.
The city's reputation holds a lot of pull, Dredhart said.
This is definitely the community that is recognized as global leaders, it’s the hub,” said Dredhart. “The mining expo will show everyone what we’ve got.”
