Rock Tech Lithium is starting a preliminary economic assessment (PEA) of its Georgia Lake lithium property in northwestern Ontario.

DMT Group has been hired to do the PEA while also working on an updated resource estimate of the property, located 145 kilometres northeast of Thunder Bay.

The last estimate was done in 2012. An updated estimate is due out shortly – based on Rock Tech’s work over the last 18 months – and is expected to show an increase in total tonnage and an upgrade in the resource. It will be folded into the PEA.

The last resource estimate from October 2012 showed an indicated resource of 3.19 million tonnes grading 1.10 per cent lithium oxide and an inferred resource at 6.31 million tonnes grading 1.00 per cent.

"DMT's well-qualified personnel with worldwide project experience and in-depth knowledge of international environmental, technical and financial requirements for the evaluation of mineral projects make them the perfect partner for the development of the Georgia Lake project,” said Rock Tech CEO Martin Stephan in a June 4 news release.

The deposit was discovered in the Thunder Bay Mining district, close to Lake Superior, in 1955.

Rock Tech, a junior miner focused on lithium and other battery-grade metals, has been working there since 2016. It’s exploring a lithium-rich pegmatite vein deposit which may be mineable.

"We have made successful investments over the past few years at Georgia Lake including the first-ever NI 43-101 resource estimate, the successful bench-scale production of high-grade spodumene concentrate and battery-grade lithium carbonate and the discovery of several additional lithium-bearing pegmatites," added Rock Tech board chairman Dirk Harbecke.

"The commissioning of a PEA represents a huge leap forward in the development of the Georgia Lake property. We are happy to work with DMT on it, a respected international institution which huge experience in bringing projects into production."
