A coroner’s inquest will be held to investigate the circumstances surrounding a 2014 fatality that took place at a Matheson-area mine.

Dr. Emily Groot, regional supervising coroner in Sudbury, announced July 26 that an inquest will be held into the death of Michael Fournier Bolduc, 26.

Bolduc died on June 25, 2014, when a dead tree fell on him at the Holt Mine, east of Matheson.

An inquest is mandatory under the Coroners Act. The jury may make recommendations aimed at preventing future deaths.

Details regarding the date and location will be provided at a later date. Dr. Steven Bodley will preside as inquest coroner and Michael Blain will be counsel to the coroner.

Bolduc was a contractor for Orbit Garant, a drilling company. After a Ministry of Labour investigation into the accident, the company was fined $200,000 in 2017.
