A plan to ship Voisey’s Bay nickel concentrate to Sudbury via Manitoulin Island has been scrapped by Inco.

The controversial proposal by Alexander Centre Industries Ltd., operators of a salt and sand receiving facility at Fisher Harbour on LaCloche Island, is no longer on the nickel producer’s short-list.

“We’ve been in the process of reviewing all the bids, some we’ve short-listed and others have dropped out of the process, and that’s one of the ones we dropped out,” says Inco spokesman Cory McPhee.

“We haven’t made our final decision on how we’re going to ship nickel concentrate up to Sudbury but it’s likely going to involve rail and it’s a decision

we’re looking to make by June at the latest.”

McPhee says a contract is already in place to ship nickel over a six-year period from Voisey’s Bay to a St. Lawrence Seaway port and rail it to smelters in Sudbury and Thompson, Man.
