A month after starting a federal environmental assessment (EA) on its Springpole Gold Project in northwestern Ontario, First Mining Gold has embarked on the provincial EA process.

The Vancouver junior miner announced April 23 that it will be crafting the terms of reference for review by the Ministry of the Environment and Climate Change.

It will describe the scope of the process and formulate a work plan to address all the EA requirements, including consultation with neighboring Indigenous people.

The company is keen on permitting and developing its Springpole Gold Project, 110 kilometres northeast of Red Lake. A preliminary economic assessment made public last September indicated that Springpole has a 12-year life as an open pit gold and silver mine.

First Gold has 25 properties in North America and Mexico. Springpole is one of four cornerstone properties it has northwestern Ontario.

“We believe Springpole has the potential to become one of Canada’s largest producing gold mines,” gushed company president Jeff Swinoga in a news release.

“With permitting for an access road to the project site now well underway and, having already commenced the federal environmental assessment process, we are very pleased to initiate the provincial environmental assessment process in Ontario. Both EAs can now progress simultaneously. These two EA processes mark the first major steps toward permitting Springpole.”

First Mining started the federal EA process for Springpole on March 7.
