Morris Medd, a former president at Redpath Group of Companies, headquartered in North Bay, has been inducted into the International Mining Technology Hall of Fame.

Medd started his career at Redpath in 1959 as a miner at the Goderich Sifto salt mine before moving up to project manager, group contract manager, senior vice-president of operations, and finally as president. He served as president between 2000 and 2005.

After more than 45 years in the field of mine contracting and development, Medd is considered an expert in the field of shaft sinking.

A highlight of Medd’s career is his work on the No. 9 shaft-sinking project for the Creighton Mine in Sudbury, owned at the time by the International Nickel Company (now Vale). Under his leadership, a crew lined and equipped a deep concrete shaft measuring 21 feet (6.4 metres) by 7,200 feet (2,194.5 metres) — a significant task for the day.

Medd was recognized for his contributions to underground development during a gala ceremony in Denver, Colo., on Feb. 20.
