Goldcorp is investigating the cause of an underground fire at its Musselwhite Mine, 500 kilometres north of Thunder Bay.

The fire was discovered on March 29 at 6 p.m. during a shift change.

The company said in a March 31 news release that there were no reported injuries as no one was in the mine at the time.

Musselwhite's mine rescue team was deployed and extinguished the fire.

Goldcorp said the mine must be cleared of gases before repair work commences or the resumption of mine operations.

The company said it’s too early to determine the source of the fire or the impact on underground operations, but surface operations continue.

Goldcorp said it carries comprehensive insurance for property damage and business interruption insurance to cover fixed costs and lost profits during the period of disruption.

Ministry of Labour spokeswoman Janet Deline said her ministry was informed of the fire on the same day and a provincial government inspector attended the scene on March 31.

"No orders or requirements have been issued and our investigation is ongoing."
