There will be mining execs and ribboned dignitaries on hand come Monday afternoon for the official groundbreaking ceremony of the third phase of expansion at Alamos Gold’s Island Gold Mine outside Dubreuilville.

A media invitation indicates Alamos Gold president-CEO John McCluskey will be in attendance. He’ll be sharing the marquee with Northern Development Minister Greg Rickford, Energy Minister Todd Smith, Dubreuilville Mayor Beverly Nantel, MP Carol Hughes, MPP Michael Mantha, White River Mayor Angelo Bazzoni, Wawa’s Acting Mayor Pat Tait; Steven Murphy and Micheal Reid from Michipicoten First Nation; and Chief Jason Gauthier and Deputy Chief Les Nolan from Missanabie Cree First Nation.

The groundbreaking ceremony takes place at 2 p.m.

Toronto-based Alamos acquired Island Gold in 2017 and is shepherding the underground operation through a third wave of expansion as the high-grade deposit continues to grow. From an initial 1.8 million ounces five years ago, Island Gold contains 5.1 million ounces in gold reserves and resources as exploration continues. Plans to expand the mine were put into place in 2020. Associated with the US$514 million project is the sinking of a new mine shaft in an area of exploration called Island East.
