The Canadian Mining Hall of Fame (CMHF) has announced its 2020 inductees.

Launched in 1988, the CMHF recognizes outstanding achievement in the mining industry. Over its 32-year history, it’s recognized 186 men and women.

“The Canadian Mining Hall of Fame is proud to recognize four leaders who drove the Canadian mining industry forward and greatly contributed to Canadian society overall,” said Jon Baird, chair of the Canadian Mining Hall of Fame, in an Oct. 8 news release.

“Each of these inductees, representing different facets of our industry, is an exemplary leader who future generations can follow, while they work to grow and sustain responsible mining in Canada and beyond.”

The 2020 inductees include:

  • P. Jerry Asp: a member of the Tahltan Nation, Asp is a prominent Indigenous leader and advocate for the inclusion of Indigenous people in the mining industry;
  • Alex G. Balogh: Balogh shaped and built Noranda and Falconbridge into the most successful mining and metallurgical giants in Canadian history;
  • Hans T.F. Lundberg: a visionary pioneer in the development and application of geophysical and geochemical methods, Lundberg was the first to conduct ground geophysical surveys in Canada in the 1920s; and
  • Eberhard (Ebe) Scherkus: in his role as COO and then president of Agnico Eagle, he helped transform the gold miner from a regional single-mine company into a top-performing global gold producer.

The winners will be recognized during a dinner and awards ceremony on Jan. 9, 2020 at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre.

The hall of fame is a joint initiative of the Northern Miner, the Mining Association of Canada, the Prospectors and Developers Association of Canada, and the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum.
