Newfoundland-based company Acoustic Zoom has been named the winner of the 2018 #DisruptMining competition, earning the opportunity to negotiate an investment of up to $1 million to develop a proof of concept with Goldcorp.

Acoustic Zoom uses high-frequency 3-D imaging to help map complex geological formations deep within the earth's micro-structure.

"Our vision is to give confidence to investors by augmenting the value of drill results using our innovative acoustic technology," said Jacques Guigné, CEO and chief scientist professor at Acoustic Zoom, in a news release.

"Our technology maps deep within the earth's microstructure, helping exploration teams drill smarter, guide planning and achieve investment value quick. We are thrilled that Goldcorp and the judging panel of industry titans see this value and champion our vision."

"Technologies like the one presented by Acoustic Zoom will get us to our vision of being a technology company – and a mining company – faster," said Todd White, COO at Goldcorp, in the release.

"Each of the finalists brought something unique to the challenge making the deliberation process difficult for the judges. It was crystal clear at the #DisruptMining finale last night that disruptors are responding to our call to innovate."

The annual #DisruptMining competition, hosted by Goldcorp, encourages companies to come up with disruptive ideas and technologies to address challenges in mining, with the potential of winning up to $1 million in investment money to develop a proof of concept. More than 100 ideas were submitted to the 2018 competition.

Net proceeds from the finale event will be invested in the future of the mining industry through innovation-focused scholarships.
