Opponents of a toxic waste incinerator for Kirkland Lake have delivered 60,000 letters to the Ministry of Environment.

Public Concern Temiskaming, a group which includes citizens from Northern Ontario and western Quebec, submitted letters, faxes and e-mails opposing the Bennett incinerator plan during the 11-week public comment period on the controversial project, which recently closed.

Letter-writing groups were formed in the Timiskaming region, as well as Cochrane, Matheson, Kirkland Lake, Toronto, Ottawa, Burk's Falls, Orillia and Huntsville. About six thousand letters were collected from rural residents in Quebec's Abitibi-Temiscaming region.

The ministry will produce a review of the environmental assessment in mid-October before the public will have another opportunity to comment.
