Ministry of Labour investigating Sault-area death of construction worker

The Ministry of Labour, Training and Skills Development has confirmed that a worker has died on the site of a construction project outside of Sault Ste. Marie.

The ministry told SooToday that it was notified Jan. 3 of an incident on Whitman Dam Road near Searchmont, located about 40 minutes north of the city. 

It was reported that a worker sustained fatal injuries when a piece of equipment fell on the worker.

The constructor of the project is Avery Construction Ltd.

The Sault Ste. Marie firm specializes in road building, sewer and water installations and repairs, harvesting, land clearing, material handling, and transportation.

Two ministry inspectors and one ministry engineer attended the scene on Jan. 6.

No orders or requirements were issued by the ministry.

The name of the deceased has not been released.

"Our thoughts are with the family and colleagues of the worker who passed away," said a ministry spokesperson via email.

The investigation into the death is ongoing.
