Waubetek seeking award nominees

The business development corporation will honour its 2017 award winners in November.

Nominations are now being accepted for the 2017 Waubetek Business Awards.

The annual event recognizes outstanding Aboriginal businesses and entrepreneurs in four categories: New Entrepreneur of the Year, Youth Entrepreneur of the Year, Business Achievement Award, and Business Merit Award.

This year’s awards gala will be held Nov. 2 at Rama Casino and Resort in Orillia. Tickets for the event are on sale now.

The Waubetek Business Development Corporation, located on the Whitefish River First Nation, is an Aboriginal-owned and controlled organization that delivers business financing and economic development services to First Nations and Aboriginal businesses located throughout northeastern Ontario.

Its goal is to assist in strengthening the economies of the local First Nation, as well as the whole region of Ontario, through business and community development.

Waubetek works with 27 First Nations in a catchment area that extends along Highway 17, from Sault Ste. Marie along the North Shore of Lake Huron, including Manitoulin Island through Sudbury, and North Bay to Mattawa; along Highway 11 north to Temagami from North Bay; and Highways 69 and 400 south of Sudbury to Orillia and Barrie.

Waubetek was awarded the First Nations Business Award of Excellence during the Northern Ontario Business Awards in 2016.
