The Goodman School of Mines is running the Goodman Gold Challenge to give undergraduate students real world experience in recognising and following high performing mining companies.

This weekend students from eight universities get to shape the future of an up-and-coming mining company.

Jan. 26 to 28, The Goodman School of Mines at Laurentian University is holding its annual Goodman Gold Challenge, where 10 teams of undergraduate students will use their skills to evaluate three companies and pick one to recommend as a high-investment opportunity.

The challenge, according to Jonathan Goodman, originator of the Goodman Gold Challenge, is to put students' academic credentials to the test as they interview members of the company to gauge their potential. They are also competing for a cash prize of the equivalent value of four ounces of gold.

This year's companies are Sabina Gold & Silver Corp., Nighthawk Gold Corp., and Wesdome Gold Mines Ltd.

“This year the focus of the valuation exercise will be distributed across a long-term, well-managed but small to intermediate producer, a company at the pre-production resource building feasibility stage and a company that is post-discovery and drilling for grade and width as they start building resources,“ said Goodman.

“All three companies have good blue-sky potential and will need an excellent grasp on property geology and structure controls on mineralization.”

Teams registered are from Laurentian University, Queen’s University, Ryerson University, York University, University of Manitoba, University of Ontario Institute of Technology, University of Toronto, and Kentucky University.

The final round of student presentations and awards gala are open to the public and tickets are available.
